Linz
Like an oversized picture frame, the Lentos Art Museum stands directly on the Danube, providing a whole new view of the river and Pöstlingberg Mountain. The ‘Lentos’ lettering is written more than 33,000 times on the modern glass façade, which is illuminated with colourful lighting at night.
But the building, designed by Swiss architecture firm Weber & Hofer in 2003, is not all that’s impressive here – amazing things are to be found inside as well. Here, visitors can view modern and contemporary art by Klimt, Schiele and Kokoschka. There are also ongoing special exhibitions and an art education programme specially designed for children.
By the way, the word ‘Lentos’ comes from the Celtic, meaning ‘located at the bend of the river’. This may have served as the source for the Roman name ‘Lentia’, which is where today’s name – Linz – comes from.
