Linz
This originally served as the last stop on the Pöstlingberg Railway, but nowadays the Grottenbahn lights up children’s eyes and puts a smile on grown ups’ faces. With its dragon train and fairytale wonderland, it offers pure nostalgia. Generations of children have visited this famous train, and countless people have memories associated with this unique place. The Grottenbahn is now more than 100 years old. Linzers would once make a kind of pilgrimage to rouse the dwarves from their hibernation on the first days of spring, and would clean them and freshen them up. Nowadays, every local child knows the phrase, ‘Let’s go to the Grottenbahn to blow the dwarves’ noses.’
The Grottenbahn has seen a lot, including quirky exhibitions like the one in 1911. People could once visit live olms on the spot where visitors today can stroll through a miniature model of Linz’s Main Square. Famous visitors like Michael Jackson have also been here. He was supposedly so taken with this wonderland that he nearly bought it and had it shipped to America.
