Linz
You have to climb 395 steps to reach the tower of the New Cathedral – and, with it, a spectacular view over Linz. It was once designed to be the tallest steeple in Austria, but, according to legend, the plans were not approved because no building in the Austro-Hungarian Empire could be taller than the tower of St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna. The tower is therefore just two metres shorter, but the church is still Austria’s largest and has space for 20,000 people. The foundation stone was laid in 1862. The cathedral was consecrated 60 years later but was only completed in 1935.
The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception or ‘New Cathedral’ is not only an architectural masterpiece but a haven of peace as well. Those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city centre will find themselves in just the right place and will be most welcome here. Be sure to take your time when looking at the church’s numerous stained glass windows. They cast peaceful rays of light when the sun shines through their modern mosaics, and you always discover new stories and faces of the city when looking through them, especially the famous Linz Window.
